New Buckenham: the history of a market town
This is a transcript of a lecture given to the Norfolk
Archaeological & Historical Research Group
by Elizabeth Rutledge in 2018.
New Buckenham is described from its inception around
1146, immediately after the establishment of William
d’Albini’s new castle, to the town’s blossoming in the mid-
16th century and its continuing role as a centre for trade.
The profusion of traders is no longer present but the village
retains a clear identity some 800 years later.
